Local radon flux maxima in the quaternary sediments of Schleswig–Holstein (Germany)

Abstract This paper presents radon flux profiles from four regions in Schleswig–Holstein (Northern Germany). Three of these are located over deep-rooted tectonic faults or salt diapirs and one is an area without any halokinetic activity, but with steep topography. Contrary to recently published studies on spatial patterns soil gas concentration we measured into the atmosphere. All devices each profile were deployed simultaneously avoid inconsistencies due strong diurnal variations exhalation. To compare data different seasons, values had be normalized. Observed apparently related mineralogical composition Quaternary strata (particularly abundance reddish granite porphyry), its grain size (with a maximum well-sorted sand/silt). Minimum occurs above non-permeable, clay-rich layers. Small amounts water content pore space increase flux, whereas excessive lessens it. Peak values, however, observed fault system eastern side Lake Plön, i.e., at boundary Eastholstein Platform Trough. Furthermore, high two associated diapirism near-surface faults. These show frequent local maxima, which indicate that uppermost very inhomogeneous. Deep-rooted increased permeability (effective depth) just boundaries between permeable impermeable appear concentrate flux. In summary, our accordance evidence low concentrations “normal” soils Schleswig–Holstein. However, likely occur distinct locations near depth, strata, finally tectonically active flanks North German Basin.
